2020 brings recognition of the Pilgrims’ landing 400 years ago and attention to reverberating impacts experienced today by the Mashpee Wampanoag. Brewster Community Network will host a screening of the Mashpee Nine documentary, as well as a discussion with filmmaker Paula Peters, on Sunday, February 9, from 230 to 4 pm at Brewster Ladies’ Library.
Mashpee Nine, a 54-minute film, looks back to the summer of 1976, when local police interrupted a group of traditional drummers and singers and arrested nine men, including eight Wampanoag. Defended by one of the American Indian movement’s most skilled and dogged attorneys, the Mashpee Nine won their case against all odds.
Through first-hand interviews, the documentary tells a story of cultural revitalization, attempted oppression, affirmation, and hope. After the screening, Ms. Peters will place the Mashpee Nine in today’s context and answer questions from the audience.
