Brewster Community Network (BCN) is hosting a screening of the documentary “One Big Home” on February 10, followed by February 12 forum intended to spark discussion about the proliferation of increasingly large seasonal homes in Brewster, especially on coastal sites and in neighborhoods north of Route 6A. Both events will be held at Brewster Ladies’ Library. onebighome.com
“One Big Home” follows the journey of a carpenter on Martha’s Vineyard as he struggles to understand the trend toward giant houses, bumps up against angry property owners and builders, purchases his own home, and works to pass a bylaw to limit house size in the town of Chilmark. The documentary, which runs 88 minutes, will be shown beginning at 2 pm on February 10. Attendees will have opportunity to share immediate impressions after the screening – or to air opinions at the follow-on event 2 days later.
The February 12 forum, beginning at 6:30 pm, will feature a presentation by Anne Greenbaum of OneTruro, the citizens’ group that worked with the Truro Planning Board in developing and helping pass bylaws restricting the size of homes both within and outside of the Cape Cod National Seashore in Truro. A follow-on panel discussion and audience Q&A will examine what’s currently allowed in Brewster, as well as explore the question, “How big is too big?” Panelists include Brewster town planner Ryan Bennett and local realtor Ned Chatelain of Chatelain Real Estate.
